Barley Björn began with a simple question: what if the animals in our care could benefit from the same advanced skin science developed for people? It is a brand of ORF Genetics, the Icelandic biotech company that has produced growth factors for over two decades.
Instead of extracting these proteins from animals or growing them in bacterial cultures, ORF grows them in barley. The result is a finished, ready-to-use range for animal skin and coat care, made by the same team that supplies growth factors to research institutions worldwide. Growth factors are naturally occurring proteins that act as signalling molecules, guiding skin cell renewal and conditioning. Each Barley Björn serum contains six recombinant growth factors (EGF, IGF-1, PDGF-BB, GM-CSF, KGF and VEGF), each supporting a specific part of the skin's natural processes.
They are produced in barley grown in ORF's geothermally powered greenhouse in Iceland. The growth factors are expressed in the barley grain and purified from the seed, with no animal-derived materials at any stage. It is the same plant-based platform ORF has used to make growth factors for over two decades.
Barley Björn serums are plant-produced, with no animal-derived components, which reduces the risk of contamination. They contain no antibiotics and no steroids. As with any grooming product, we recommend introducing it gradually and consulting your vet if your animal has a specific condition.
Deep Conditioning Serum is for skin and coat that needs sustained, everyday conditioning. Rapid Recovery Serum is for the early phase, when skin is freshly stressed. Surface Smoothing Serum is for areas where the surface is uneven or raised. If you are not sure which fits your animal, get in touch and we will help.
It depends on the serum. Rapid Recovery Serum is typically used once or twice daily during the early phase. Surface Smoothing Serum is used daily. Deep Conditioning Serum is used daily over a longer period. Follow the guidance on each product.
